This illustrated teacher's guide provides background and activities for helping youths aged 12 and older to understand basic wildlife biology and ecology. The first of the guide's five chapters is an introduction explaining the purpose and format of the guide, addressing safety and responsibility issues, and defining several terms and concepts used throughout the text. Chapter 2, "Wildlife Survival and Needs," and chapter 3, "Wildlife Habitats," cover important concepts about wildlife biology and ecology. Chapter 4, "Backyard Wildlife: What You Can Do," and chapter 5, "Rare Wildlife Species: What You Can Do," outline some actions that can be taken to benefit the wildlife found in human communities. Discussion questions, illustrations, and activities are provided in each chapter to help convey the material. Reproducible record sheets for the activities are included in the pocket folder, along with a list of endangered and threatened species and species of special concern for New York State. The teacher's guide contains a glossary of terms. Appended are: (1) information on wildlife habitat improvement programs; (2) a list of organizations that aid threatened and endangered species; and (3) references for further reading and references used in preparing the guide.
