Supervising Graduate Assistants
White, Jessica; Nonnamaker, John
New Directions for Student Services, n136 p43-54 Win 2011
Discussions of personnel management in student affairs literature and at national conferences often focus on supervising new or midlevel professionals and the myriad challenges and possibilities these relationships entail (Carpenter, 2001; Winston and Creamer, 1997). Graduate students as employees and the often-complicated and ill-structured supervisory relationships that exist for them are frequently overlooked or mentioned only briefly in such leadership conversations (Dalton, 2003; Kouzes and Posner, 2003). This oversight is not unique to discussions of graduate student supervision, though, as the graduate student experience is generally underrepresented in scholarly literature (Bair, Haworth, and Sandfort, 2004; Guentzel and Nesheim, 2006). The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the graduate student as an employee and consider the complex relationships that can exist between supervisors and graduate assistants. The authors provide a brief overview of graduate students on university campuses; offer an introduction to the traditional roles and functions of graduate assistants; discuss the complexity, challenges, and opportunities that supervisors face in working with graduate assistants in student affairs settings; and review implications and offer suggestions.
