Families with young children are the fastest growing population of the homeless. Homeless young children (under the age of 5) are especially vulnerable as early childhood professionals consider the early years to be the most critical developmental period in all domains (cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language). The disruptions to a sense of stability and security and the lack of cognitive stimulation that comes with homelessness have a large impact on young children and their development. This article defines homelessness, summarizes what we know about the experiences of homeless children, reviews some of the educational rights offered to them, and offers a few strategies in working with homeless children and their families.
