Low Adoption Rates of Electronic Medical Records Systems: A Qualitative Study
Slaughter, Andre
ProQuest LLC, DM/IST Dissertation, University of Phoenix
This qualitative phenomenological research study explored the challenges of physicians working with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems for medical documentation. Additionally, this study sought to understand why many providers sought alternate means of patient documentation. Previous research studies focused on the use of EMR systems from the perspective of system designers. Few, if any studies looked at electronic medical documentation from the perspective of physicians. Thus, most EMR systems were designed without direct input from physicians. This research study explored the lived experiences of 11 physicians, with various specialties, working with EMR systems in medical facilities located in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The guiding research question for this study was: What are the lived experiences of physicians that work with EMR systems in medical facilities? The key finding of this study was that many EMR challenges of physicians were because electronic medical documentation systems being designed out of sync with the ways in which physicians were trained in medical school. Thus, in addition to seeing patients, physicians were additionally burdened with spending time inputting patient information and making sure all forms were in the correct order in the patients file, otherwise risk the possibility of misdiagnoses because vital patient's information could not be retrieved timely.
