The aim of this paper is to bring some conceptual synthesis to the deliberations of the conference, "What Do We Know About Teaching and Learning in Urban Schools?". The author begins with an attempt to define the concept of urban education, and continues with an identification of some of the critical issues related to urban life and education in urban settings. The tendency to equate urban education with the education of minority groups or with the education of the underclasses is critiqued. Also discussed are the trend toward urbanization, the educability of all people, cultural pluralism, temperament, sex and gender differences, language, testing, educational finance, and resource utilization.
