Todd Sollar, a laid-off autoworker from Ohio who is studying for an associate degree in engineering at Sinclair Community College, in Dayton, OH, went to Capitol Hill to help educate lawmakers about the importance of including support for community colleges in the economic-stimulus bill. Mr. Sollar came to Washington with Sinclair's president, and several representatives of the college to attend the annual legislative summit held by the Association of Community College Trustees. While in town, they visited lawmakers on Capitol Hill, trying to help legislators and their staffs better understand the needs of older students, who have lost jobs and know that returning to the classroom may be their best hope of regaining some economic stability in their lives. The author describes Mr. Sollar as a walking symbol of the large role that two-year colleges must play in the nation's economic recovery, but suggests that lawmakers who have crafted a $789-billion package have little in common with Rust Belt towns.
