In Search of Mutual Understanding: A Classroom Approach to Japan.

An activity book is designed to address problems and oversights in classroom coverage of Japan discovered by the Japan/United States Textbook Study Project. Activities which focus on Japanese religion, language, and geography address two important questions: what immediate application does the textbook study have for classroom teachers and how can the work of scholars involved in the project find its way into daily classroom routine? Following an introduction and foreword, material is presented in 15 parts. "Culture Overview" provides a background reading on Japan for teachers. An introductory lesson on Japanese society and culture provides a pretest of student knowledge about Japan. A reading for teachers on Japanese religion is followed by a working outline for a lecture on religion and two student activities: organized vs. folk religion and religion in the modern Japanese family. A teacher reading on the Japanese language is complemented by Japanese language and pictograph activities for students. A geography overview for teachers is followed by four student activities: similarities and differences among the Japanese, a comparison or Japan and other Asian countries, earthquakes in Japan, and a look at facts and myths about Japan. A final section provides guidelines for going beyond this booklet. (LP)
