Notes that much of American public, political leadership, and service providers share marked denial of antecedents, dynamics, and consequences of dysfunctional drug use. Examines dynamics of this denial, describes popular images of drug use and drug users in American culture, and considers roots of these images in the underlying value systems of American society.
