In 2006, as part of the compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, Mississippi implemented a state-wide dropout prevention plan. The Mississippi Department of Education through the Office of Dropout Prevention supplied a skeletal format to serve as a guideline for all 152 individual school districts within the state. The school districts were to assess the individual districts and write a dropout prevention plan to meet the unique needs of each school district. The basic information required from all school districts included: (a) district dropout rates, (b) district graduation rates, (c) district number of GED completers, (d) district truancy rates, and (e) whether or not the school district had a dropout prevention coordinator and/or a truancy officer. This study examined the predictive relationship of the components (dropout coordinator and/or truancy officer) of the dropout prevention plans and the dropout rates, truancy rates, number of GED completers, and graduation rates of high school teens in school districts in the state of Mississippi. The findings of the multiple regressions and simple regressions in this particular study indicated that dropout rates and graduation rates and the dropout prevention plan component, dropout coordinator, were closely related and that dropout rates and graduation rates could be predicted based on the individual component, dropout coordinator. Truancy rates and whether or not a school district had a truancy officer were not available for 11 school districts. Therefore, truancy officer was not used as a predictor variable for truancy rates. Although dropout prevention coordinator had a significant correlation for truancy rates, it was not advisable to use it as a predictor. In addition, the dropout prevention plan's components, dropout coordinator and truancy officer, were found to have weak and non-significant correlations to number of GED completers and thus did not have a predictive impact.
