Walking with Grandfather and Great Wolf and Little Mouse Sister. Teacher's Guide.
Lethbridge Univ. (Alberta).; Kipohtakaw Education Centre, Morinville (Alberta).
Written for use with videotaped versions of the stories "Walking with Grandfather" and "Great Wolf and Little Mouse Sister," this guide presents 20 lessons that teachers can adapt for students of various ages and use in integrated units or other curriculum approaches. The introductory material describes the use and philosophy of the video stories, which were chosen as part of an effort to develop curriculum and educational programs that introduce life-enhancing values derived from the core of traditional Native culture. The 20 lessons are organized under the subjects of language arts (11 lessons), volition and feelings (1 lesson each), science (3 lessons), and mathematics, drama, physical education, and music (1 lesson each). Each lesson states the focus and objectives for students and provides detailed plans for learning activities. The language arts lesson focusing on legends lists five objectives for students: defining legend, giving examples of legends, analyzing legends for lessons learned, comparing legends, and writing an original legend. Learning activities include class discussion, use of visualization as a memory technique, and a story retelling game to illustrate oral tradition. The section on volition presents activities centered around a class field trip to help students plan and achieve a goal. Both story scripts are included. (JHZ)
