This booklet focuses on three particularly prevalent family crises: divorce, the death of a parent, and poverty. These crises profoundly affect millions of children in their personal, academic, and social development. The information and activities in this booklet are provided to enable Girl Scout leaders to increase their efforts both in helping girls become aware of some common family stresses and in assisting girls in handling those serious family problems that personally touch their lives. The effects of divorce on children of different ages and sexes as well as the changes in family environment brought about by remarriage are discussed. The discussion on death of a parent focuses on the grieving by the child. The effects of growing up in poverty for children are discussed, examining the physical and emotional effects of poverty. It is noted that a strong adult can influence children's lives positively. Specific tips are given on providing the kind of environment which will help girls not directly faced with serious family problems to act with understanding and sensitivity toward those who are dealing with them. Suggested troop and group activities to help girls understand and cope with family crises are described in sections grouped by the level of Girl Scouting. Links to Girl Scouting programs are given and a resource list of organizations is provided. Supportive books for girls and adults are listed. (ABL)
