Chinese International Students' Advice to Incoming First-Year Students: Involving Students in Conversations "with" Them, Not about Them
Heng, Tang T.
Journal of College Student Development, v59 n2 p232-238 Mar-Apr 2018
This study examined advice Chinese internationals would give to incoming Chinese international first-year students to ease their US college transitions. While the study was limited to 18 students from private, well ranked, 4-year liberal arts colleges who all appeared to be coping with their transitions (struggling students may have shied from participating), the findings can be instructive for those with similar backgrounds. Even readers from institutions or backgrounds drastically different from those in this study may find the method of soliciting peer advice insightful. Participants in this study suggested that incoming students prepare themselves linguistically and culturally, make more friends when they arrive, and be open and unafraid. The suggestion to be linguistically and culturally proficient was unsurprising as it paralleled scholars' observations on how these aspects pose academic and social challenge; however, participants' suggestions departed from and extended previous findings by virtue of the range of concrete examples and reasons given. They downplayed English textbooks, proposed contemporary digital and nondigital media, and stressed that cultural familiarity was as important as linguistic proficiency. Cultural familiarity was essential as it also supported participants' advice of making more friends.
