Employee Assistance Programs in Higher Education. Alcohol, Mental Health and Professional Development Programming for Faculty and Staff.
Thoreson, Richard W., Ed.; Hosokawa, Elizabeth P., Ed.
The promotion of employee assistance programs (EAP) in higher education is considered in 24 chapters, with an emphasis on enhancing resources and the academic environment for faculty and staff. Seven topical areas are addressed: history of EAP; characteristics of higher education; alcoholism and other risks in the academic life-style; EAP models and implementation strategies; training, orientation, consultation, and publicity; assessment and motivational interview strategies; and evaluation. Attention is directed to training programs that consider the unique job performance values and organizational structure found in college settings. Ways that academics' life-style and values can inhibit identification and referral of a person suffering from personal problems, especially alcoholism, are described. Four EAP program models are examined: the Brown University Chemical Dependency Program model, the Stanford University EAP health center program model, the Lincoln consortium model emphasizing alcoholism and serving 40 businesses, and the University of Missouri-Columbia EAP model. Also considered are EAP assessment services that differ from traditional counseling in their emphasis on: problem diagnosis, motivation of client to accept the referral, assessment for alcohol problems, and the monitoring of the referral network.
