A program was designed in which families could (1) discuss the social-emotional impact of diabetes on family members and on their self-esteem; (2) integrate discussion outcomes with knowledge of how a child's normative developmental tasks in the school years are affected by the illness; and (3) learn ways of rebuilding self-esteem.
