Orrs Elementary School in Griffin-Spalding County, Georgia, was selected as a 2010 National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership (CEP) and was honored at the National Forum of Character Education awards ceremony in San Francisco, California. According to Principal Dexter Martin, character education is more than a phrase or a concept at Orrs. It's a way of life involving both the school and community. Administrators, faculty, and staff teach character education through a series of programs and activities designed to instill in students positive core values. The school takes steps to insure that everyone adopts and is committed to these core values. Although such values are not easy to uphold in today's society, they play a vital role in the development of tomorrow's leaders. Helping students learn to appreciate, respect, and conduct themselves as responsible young citizens creates a solid foundation for them to make good decisions when faced with difficult situations. This article presents some key elements of Orrs Elementary School's award-winning character education program.
