Clovis-Portales Bilingual Early Childhood Program: Second Year Evaluation Study (1973-74).
Askins, Billy E.; And Others
This report describes and evaluates a bilingual early education intervention program, designed to provide children with successful experiences, using the concept of responsive environment in language development (English and Spanish) and in cognitive and affective development. Instructional, community-parental involvement, staff development, and materials development components of the program are described. The evaluation examined the program's two major components: instructional (language development in English and Spanish, school readiness, and subjective evaluation of the self-concept) and community-parental involvement (information dissemination to community organizations, and home visits providing parents with training in child development and techniques for preschool education in the home). Findings indicated that the students made significant gains in language ability in English and Spanish, general school readiness, developing and maintaining a positive self-image, and developing various dimensions of personality growth.
