The Effects of Social Emotional Learning and Academic Achievement in Adolescents
Michelle Wisniewski
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, University of St. Francis
The objective of this study was to examine the relationships among an individual's social emotional wellbeing, the extent to which a student's level of basic necessities having been met impact school performance and their academic achievement. The study sought to determine the strength of the correlation among the relationship individuals have with their teachers and parents/guardians, and their academic achievement including test scores and grades in a middle school located in the south suburbs of Chicago. This study utilized a quantitative experimental design examining normed data from a literary testing system: NWEA. How parents/guardians feel about school will be discerned by examining the use of 5 Essentials Survey data. In this study, parent responses on the 5 Essentials survey were compared to their student's responses and then to the student's NWEA data. Research completed by Immardino-Yang (2018) stated "the quality of a person's relationships and social interactions shapes their development and health, both of the body and of the brain" (p. 3). In other words, Maslow before Bloom. Maslow posits individuals' basic necessities in life need to be taken care of before students will be ready to learn and understand the information being presented. This researcher gained permission through the school's superintendent, the Board of Education, and the participating parties to collect data and information pertinent to this study.
