Perl-Nussbaum, David; Yerushalmi, Edit – Physical Review Physics Education Research, 2022
Inquiry practices can be integrated into various settings that differ in terms of their constraints and hence in the scope and depth of the practices that students experience. Key policy papers suggest implementing a gradual learning sequence for inquiry practices so that students' learning experiences in more constrained settings can serve them…

Zemel, Yoram; Shwartz, Gabby; Avargil, Shirly – Chemistry Education Research and Practice, 2021
In recent years teachers' education programs encourage preservice teachers to practice a variety of assessment methods to prepare them to be highly qualified practitioners who are capable in enhancing students' scientific understanding. Formative assessment (FA) -- also known as assessment for learning -- involves the process of seeking and…

Abu, Yuval Ben; Wolfson, Ira; Bran, Gil; Yizhaq, Hezi – Physics Education, 2017
In high-school teaching of mechanics, we deal, among other things, with the nature of static and kinetic friction, forces that are proportional to the normal force. Under the influence of frictional forces, a body moves down a rough sloped decline at a fixed rate of acceleration that is independent of its mass. This situation does not apply to…

Bar, Varda; Shirtz, Aviv Spector; Brosh, Yafa; Sneider, Cary – Science Educator, 2019
In light of extensive research demonstrating widespread misconceptions about electricity, this paper describes a learning study that targeted the most likely source of difficulty--failure of middle school pupils to develop a mental model that serves as a bridge between static and current electricity. During the intervention, pupils first envision…

Berman, Abraham; Shvartsman, Ludmila – European Journal of Science and Mathematics Education, 2016
In this paper we describe an experiment in a linear algebra course. The aim of the experiment was to promote the students' understanding of the studied concepts focusing on their definitions. It seems to be a given that students should understand concepts' definitions before working substantially with them. Unfortunately, in many cases they do…

Hugerat, Muhamad; Kortam, Naji – EURASIA Journal of Mathematics, Science & Technology Education, 2014
Twenty-eight freshmen majoring in biology and/or chemistry in an Arab college in Israel, were given a pre-test and a post-test in which they had to identify the control group and design a controlled experiment. During the course an intervention was used. Science was taught by inquiry while using strategies that promote higher-order thinking skills…

Kraftmakher, Yaakov – Physics Education, 2009
Simple measurements of the decay time of cathodoluminescence are described. Cathodoluminescence is used in many devices, including computer monitors, oscilloscopes, radar displays and television tubes. The experimental setup is simple and easy to build. Two oscilloscopes, a function generator, and a fast photodiode are needed for the experiments.…

Hofstein, Avi; And Others – Science Education, 1976
This study developed and validated an inventory to measure students' attitudes toward and interest in laboratory work in high school chemistry. Factor analysis provided some evidence that interest in and attitude towards laboratory work in high school chemistry is not unidimensional, as it has been assumed to be. (BT)

Finegold, M.; Meyer, J. – Studies in Educational Evaluation, 1985
To improve the testing of students' skills in performing laboratory experiments, 92 Israeli high school physics teachers participated in the development of a list of weighted laboratory skills. Sensory-motor coordination was found to be a significant measured factor. Factors affecting reliability were also noted. (GDC)
