The United States Army Drill Sergeants Perception of Their Role and Responsibilities in Transforming Civilian Volunteers into Soldiers: A Qualitative Single Case Study
Jacqueline Ortiz
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
Unfortunately, not all civilian volunteers fulfill their military contracts due to failing to meet basic combat training graduation requirements or medical issues. As the primary trainers, drill sergeants (DSs) affect the completion of basic combat training and serve as gatekeepers for civilian volunteer's completion paths. Although the DSs receive training to prepare for their role as primary trainers, a perception exists that DSs are not fully prepared for the demanding, multi-faceted responsibilities. The problem addressed by this study is that the United States Army Drill Sergeants' rudimentary preparation results in an increase of untrained civilian volunteers. The purpose of this qualitative single case study is to examine United States Army Drill Sergeants' perceptions of their roles and responsibilities in transforming civilian volunteers into soldiers using adult learning principles and their perceptions of the preparation they received from United States Army Drill Sergeant Academy (DSA) instructors. The andragogy model focuses on how adult learning must be distinct in order to adapt to different learning styles. Using a qualitative single case study, a sample of 14 Army DSs provided responses to face-to-face interview questions meant to answer two research questions. RQ1 - What are drill sergeants' perceptions of their roles and responsibilities in transforming civilian volunteers into soldiers? RQ2 - What are drill sergeants' perceptions of the preparation that the United States Army Drill Sergeant Academy provides to prepare them for their complex training roles and responsibilities? The Basic Combat Training (BCT) DSs' inconsistent interpretation of their roles and responsibilities varied due to their military experiences and military occupational skills. An expectation is that these variables will be leveled through their DSA preparation. However, DSs described their preparation was designed to refresh Non-Commissioned Officers' common knowledge instead of preparing them to teach, coach, and mentor a diverse population of civilian volunteers. An ill-prepared DS can result in unprepared soldiers for their first unit of assignment and affect our nation's readiness.
