This thesis investigates the impact of computer Braille on blind professionals in terms of their need for, the availability of, and the cost of production of Braille transcriptions of serials. Related problems of an economic, legal, and educational nature are discussed as they impinge on the area of investigation. The thesis is in three parts: feasibility study, implications for librarianship, and documentation for the demonstration. The study concluded large scale serial translation is not feasible at present for an individual library. A preferable method is production of Braille "masters" from which copies can be made for the user. Cost is prohibitive because of present minimal demand for this type of product. Recommendations are made for further research, including a reader study and the set-up of a prototype Braille translation service for a sample group of prospective users.
