Strategies for Success: A Roadmap for Mergers & Acquisitions
McDermott, Christine M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
The number of mergers among higher education institutions in the United States has reached an unprecedented level. But unfortunately, the failure rates of these higher education institutions are no different. Increasing financial demands, population changes, and a deteriorating perception of postsecondary education are all contributing to the uncertainty of the future for these institutions. To complete a successful M&A process, HEIs must strategically plan and evaluate all the existing considerations. As a result, a "Strategies for Success: A Roadmap for Mergers & Acquisitions" course was created using Cox-Jones's (2001) framework, which included "partners, people, planning, politics, property, pence, and policies and procedures." Azziz et al., 2019) note that people are often preoccupied with the 'why,' 'what,' and not with the 'how.' Accordingly, Azziz et al. suggests that not understanding the "how" can cause even the most promising merger to fail. The researcher created a seven-module course based on prior M&A experiences. Higher ed professionals involved in a higher education M&A in the last 2-5 years were interviewed to provide recommendations and observations. Analysis of these recommendations will determine future modifications to the "Strategies for Success: A Roadmap for Mergers & Acquisitions" course.
