The Effects of Immersive Environments in Simulation-Based Training of Paramedic Graduates to Enhance Work Readiness
Penni Eggers
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Leo University
This study explored incorporating immersive environments into the simulation-based training of paramedics to enhance engagement and improve work-readiness status by developing more authentic simulation scenarios. The training of paramedics must move past traditional practices and critically explore better ways to prepare paramedics to perform with a mastery of medical skills and critical thinking awareness. Incorporating immersive environments can be the missing piece to provide a more authentic scenario-based training to improve new paramedics' work readiness. This study uses a descriptive phenomenological framework and comparative data to explore incorporating immersive environments into the simulation-based training of new graduate paramedics to improve work readiness by developing more authentic simulation scenarios. Quantitative data compared new hire assessment outcomes using the traditional method to the new hire assessment outcomes using immersive technology. Qualitative data from focus groups and interviews were recorded, transcribed, and organized using a coding system to create themes, categories, and findings reported in a descriptive narrative. The expected outcome from incorporating immersive environments was the improvement of new paramedic work readiness versus current practices in simulation-based training in the three required competencies of the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.
