Impacting the Career Readiness of Community College Students: The Effect of a Student Leadership Symposium

With the needs of the workforce continuously changing, community colleges need to be able to adapt quickly in providing students with the skills they need to be successful in the workforce (Baird & Parayitam, 2019; Beckem & Watkins, 2012). Many employers claim that a common problem among college graduates is that they are not consistently and adequately able to exhibit essential skills and competencies as employees (Baird & Parayitam, 2019; Beckem & Watkins, 2012). The literature affirms that college students who participate in training tend to have more economic and social mobility than those who do not participate in such training (Higgins, 2001). The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to integrate career readiness into a student leadership symposium at a community college and to assess the impact that it had on students' perceived career readiness. The impact was measured by student perception of their competency in the following skills: communication; critical thinking; diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility; teamwork; leadership; program and project management; information management; and personal growth and development through a pre- and post-survey. The results of this study illustrate the impact that a student leadership symposium had on a student's career readiness, which may provide community colleges valuable information to prepare graduates to meet the demands of current and future job markets. Although this study had a small sample size, communication and information management had statistically significant growth after participation in the student leadership symposium.
