Infusing Equity into Campus Operations: Two-Year Colleges Ramp Up Efforts to Ensure They Are Adequately Serving All Populations
Finkel, Ed
Community College Journal, v91 n5 p16-21 Apr-May 2021
In recent years and especially over the past 12 months, with the COVID-19 pandemic and the unrest after the death of George Floyd, community colleges have been making efforts to view and rethink their missions through an equity lens. These efforts have included turning this prism toward institutional operations like student services, human resources, the business office, campus security and other units. In so doing, two-year colleges can determine what needs to happen to eliminate institutional barriers that handicap students and prevent them from achieving their full potential. This article describes how Moreno Valley College (MVC) (part of the Riverside (California) Community College District), Tulsa Community College (TCC), and Johnston Community College (JCC) (Smithfield, North Carolina) have completed successful reorganizations to infuse equity into campus operations.
