Hiring Effective Principals

This study was conducted to explore how public school superintendents consider the skills, traits, behaviors, and responsibilities of effective school principals in the hiring and assessment of campus principals at high performing schools in Education Service Center Region 15 (ESC Region 15). The participants of the current study (n=42) were the district superintendents in ESC Region 15 during the 2017-2018 school year. Data was collected using a descriptive survey design to explore superintendents' consideration of the skills, traits, behaviors, and responsibilities of effective school principals in Texas public schools. Results from this study indicate superintendents found all of the 21 responsibilities identified by Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2005) as important when hiring a campus principal. Additionally the study indicated that superintendents assessed these responsibilities primarily through interviews.
