This research is an ethnography (Murchison, 2010) that describes the lived experiences of a university professor and former public school superintendent. The work explores racial integration and desegregation of America's public school system. Through a series of seven semi-structured interviews, background information has been collected about the educational leader's ethnic identity, personal experiences as a student in public schools and professional background. Descriptions of the challenges, issues, and success of racial integration are presented from the professional experience of the educational leader along with existing contemporary challenges. The following work is a narrative ethnography (Gubrium & Holstein, 2008; Denzin & Lincoln, 2005), which explores racial integration and school desegregation of America's public schools from the perspective of a former school superintendent and university professor. A series of seven semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the educational leader's professional and personal background along with his involvement in racially integrating schools through the development and defense of a school desegregation plan. The school desegregation plan was also accompanied by a sixty million dollar bond referendum, which was approved by the courts and assisted in building the first new school in his district in over twenty years. Challenges of being an African American student and teacher are discussed which are associated with racism, stereotypes and discrimination.
