An Examination of Differences in Burnout between Traditional and International Dental Students in the U.S.
Owens, Yanira Andrea
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The literature has established burnout syndrome as a modern epidemic with adverse consequences. Burnout in dental students is a growing area of research. The purpose of this quantitative comparative study was to assess if, and to what extent, differences exist in the dimensions of burnout between traditional and advanced standing student program (ASSP) dental students at one university in the Southwestern U.S. Random sampling strategy of the target population yielded a final sample of 184 dental students. The theoretical foundation of the multidimensional theory of burnout and the academic burnout model grounded this study and provided the basis for the examination of three research questions and associated hypotheses. Data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey for Students (MBI-GS(S)) and a demographic survey. Independent samples t-test analysis revealed that statistically significant differences in the dimension of exhaustion, M = 0.82, 95% CI [0.41, 1.22], t(108) = 3.97, p = 0.001, (p = <0.001), and the dimension cynicism, M = 0.96, 95% CI [0.50, 1.42], t(182)= 4.11, p = 0.001, (p = <0.001), existed between traditional and ASSP dental students. No statistically significant difference in the dimension professional efficacy, M = -0.096, 95% CI [-0.38, 0.18], t(182) = 0.68, p= 0.50 (p = >0.05), was observed between traditional and ASSP dental students. School administrators may use these findings to support the development of program-based strategies that aim to alleviate academic burnout, reduce mental health stigma, enhance learning outcomes, improve patient care, and promote the wellbeing of the future dental workforce.
