This report provides data on salaries, benefits, and perquisites commonly included in the total compensation packages available to higher education chief executives, along with data on employment policies and practices. It is based on a survey of 916 institutions representing all segments of higher education. Data are presented in 141 tables under the following categories: (1) chief executive compensation; (2) group and retirement benefits; (3) perquisites; (4) involuntary separation policies; (5) profile of chief executives; (6) recruiting/relocation policies and practices; (7) employment policies and practices; and (8) profile of participating institutions. Among the findings of this year's survey, it was found that the typical chief executive was 55 years old and has held his/her present position for 7 years. Eight percent were from minority groups and 18 percent were women. Average compensation has increased at an annual rate of 3.2 percent since 1993, and the most common perquisites were automobiles, housing expenses, and tuition reimbursement.
