The first volume of a report by the Council of Ontario Universities provides information on the 21 universities and related institutions which receive grants directly from the government of Ontario. It is part of a three-volume set offering detailed information on the revenues and expenses and changes in fund balances at all Ontario universities for the fiscal year ending in 1989. It does so within a format which attempts to provide consistent categories and definitions for all 43 provincially-assisted universities and colleges in Ontario. Two brief preliminary sections summarize the committee report and offer a general caveat concerning the lack of comparability of some of the data. An introductory section provides guidelines and definitions (university accounting principles, reporting, and submissions); principles of reporting (fund concept, revenues and expenses, and appropriated funds); and definitions (funds revenue, sources, operating expenses--functional areas, and object of expense). Summary information for all universities and colleges on a consolidated basis, is provided in eight tables. Summary information for universities is provided in 13 tables. Financial information for each institution forms the major portion of the document. (SM)
