If you asked Latino students how to improve schools for young people like themselves, what might they say? What recommendations might they have for educators committed to improving their education? The author invited a group of Latino high school students to join him as part of a research project. Their goal was to examine schooling experiences and learning opportunities for Latino students and develop recommendations for educators, researchers, and policymakers. Three distinct themes cut across the students' experiences and frame their recommendations. First, schools need to counter deficit perspectives, which suggest that cultural traits of students and their communities are the primary cause for academic underachievement. Second, schools need to broaden their understanding of cultural identities; too often, they narrowly define culture solely in terms of race or ethnicity. Finally, schools need to close opportunity gaps. The student researchers suggest that discrepancies in achievement stem from gaps in opportunity, not from a pathology among students or their communities.
