It's So Amazing! A Book about Eggs, Sperm, Birth, Babies, and Families.
Harris, Robie H.
This book, for children aged 7 and up, is designed to teach younger children about human biology and healthy sexuality, allowing parents and teachers to answer children's questions. Comic book style, full-color artwork illustrates the age-appropriate text and reflects an elementary school child's interest in biology and how things work. The book discusses bodies and health, pregnancy, birth, adoption, babies, and all types of families. It tells the story of the amazing trips taken by the egg and the sperm, showing when and how an egg travels to the uterus and how sperm travel and can meet an egg. Actual-size illustrations follow a single cell's growth month to month over 9 months as it becomes a baby ready to be born. The book also explains in vitro and ultrasound, shows how twins begin, and describes how a fetus gets food and air and how the growing baby kicks and hiccups inside the uterus. The book discusses sex and love, including love for a parent, friend, sibling, or pet. It also discusses heterosexual and homosexual love. It offers age-appropriate information on sexual abuse and HIV and AIDS. It recognizes the positive and negative feelings younger children have about a new baby coming into the family, while emphasizing the uniqueness of every child. Besides presenting information, this book encourages respect for differences. (SM)
