The 1994 edition of the NEA Almanac of Higher Education offers this year, in addition to the usual statistical data that the almanac has traditionally provided, seven articles that analyze important trends in higher education by leading scholars from across the nation. "Faculty Salaries, 1992-1993" by John B. Lee gives a detailed analysis of salary trends and factors associated both with the lack of real increases in faculty salaries over the last 3 years and those associated with higher salaries. "Workload and Productivity in an Accountability Era" by Henry L. Allen examines the changing political, economic, and social climate, the changing demands of an academic career, and the evidence about faculty workload and productivity as well as changing working conditions, demographics, and productivity. "The Value of Teaching, Research, and Service" by James S. Fairweather reports on a study of the relation between faculty pay and teaching and instruction, research and scholarship, administration, and public service. "Trends in Bargaining" by Christine Mainland and Rachel Hendrickson uses results from an analysis of 120 contracts to focus on impact of the Family Medical Leave Act, sexual harassment issues, and retrenchment and layoff provisions in contracts. "State Policy and Budget Developments" by William Zumeta and Janet Looney examines how access to education imperatives collide with supply side constraints and public skepticism about higher education. "Benefits and Retirement" by Jay L. Chronister demonstrates how changing faculty demography and rising health care costs strongly influence institutional and individual decisions about retirement and benefits. "Administrative Staff: Salaries and Issues" by David C. Montgomery and Gwendolyn L. Lewis describes national trends in demographics, qualification, compensation, and career paths over the last decade. All papers contain extensive references. Part 2, the Faculty Salary Report, contains statistical information for 3,194 institutions organized by state, institutional type and control. (JB)
