This brochure outlines the general provisions of the Personal Privacy Protection Law (Public Officers Law, Article 6-A, sections 91-99) which became effective on September 1, 1984, and is intended to protect each individual's privacy by regulating the manner in which the state collects, maintains, and disseminates personal information about its citizens. Included in the brochure are brief discussions of: (1) terms used in the law; (2) state agencies' responsibilities; (3) how to obtain your records; (4) your right to correct or amend your record; (5) your right to disagree; (6) fees; (7) protection of privacy; (8) notation of disclosures to others about you; and (9) other laws that protect privacy. Also included are sample letters for requesting records; appealing a denial of access of records; requesting to amend records; and appealing a refusal to amend records. (CGD)
