A Competency-Based Framework for Graduate-Level Health Educators.
American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, Reston, VA. American Association for Health Education.; National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc., Allentown, PA.; Society for Public Health Education, Washington, DC.
This document builds on the 1997 Standards for the Preparation of Graduate-Level Health Educators by including expanded content descriptors and objectives for the graduate level competencies. It begins by discussing evolution of health education competencies; chronology of the graduate standard development process; benefits of graduate level responsibilities and competencies; implications of the graduate responsibilities and competencies; next steps for the profession; three new areas of graduate responsibility; competencies and sub-competencies additions to the existing framework; and role descriptors for graduate level competencies VIII, IX, and X. Responsibilities and competencies for graduate level health educators are: assessing individual and community needs for health education; planning effective health education programs; implementing health education programs; evaluating effectiveness of health education programs; coordinating provision of health education services; acting as a resource person; communicating health and health education needs, concerns, and responsibilities; applying appropriate research principles and techniques in health education; administering health education programs; and advancing the profession. Five appendixes present a glossary; the Joint Committee for the Development of Graduate-Level Preparation Standards; members of the Graduate Competencies Implementation Committee; members of the Graduate Competencies Writing Ad-Hoc Committee; and information about the sponsoring related health education organizations.
