Information Networks and Education: An Analytic Bibliography.
Pritchard, Roger
This literature review presents a broad and overall perspective on the various kinds of information networks that will be useful to educators in developing nations. There are five sections to the essay. The first section cites and briefly describes the literature dealing with library, information, and computer networks. Sections two and three examine social networks which are defined as connections between individuals, groups, and institutions through which information passes back and forth. Networks within and between organizations is the topic of the literature search in section four. The fifth section is on diffusion/exchange of new ideas, practices, and theories. A summary of the essay indicates that there is a relative lack and unevenness of documentation. No citations were found, for example, on how to organize, build up, and maintain a formal cooperative library network. Included among the recommendations to Unesco were that it focus further on the question of users; the form in which they need information, and the best means of delivering it to them; and that it examine the formal system/informal network interface by looking further into such intermediaries as information brokers, gatekeepers, and others who may actively guide and assist users. It was also suggested that Unesco compare library networks with the news media to discover to what extent outreach can be improved and what lessons news organizations may have to offer. (Author/RM)
