Reflections on Adult Learning in Cultural Institutions
Parrish, Marilyn McKinley
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n127 p87-95 Fall 2010
Cultural institutions are rich locations for adult learning. Despite apparent differences in mission, they are similar in many ways. Similarities include social and historical development, educational philosophy and objectives, epistemological tensions and contestations, and challenges associated when attracting and educating adult visitors. In an effort to better understand these issues in relationship to the field of adult education, this chapter explores shared themes that emerge throughout the volume. Themes include adult learning in cultural institutions, the importance of context to the stories that institutions share, cultural institutions as sites that heighten emotions, and as sites that can foster social change. Implications for practice and suggestions for future research are also explored.
