One Family's Journey: Medical Home and the Network of Supports It Offers Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. Part One
MacDonald, Sarah; Gatto, Molly; Walker, Deb; Turchi, Renee
Exceptional Parent, v37 n9 p62-64 Sep 2007
This is the first article in a year long series that presents the experiences of a fictitious couple, Amita and Samir, as they learn to adapt to the reality of having a premature baby with special needs. Doris, the fictitious nurse who took care of baby Anjali in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), has had ten years of experience working in the NICU and has become adept at helping new parents cope with the stress of their baby's health issues. Doris was the nurse who first introduced "Medical Home" to Amita and Samir. A Medical Home is not a building but rather a team oriented approach to providing healthcare services to children with special healthcare needs. Readers will spend the next year visiting with this family and learning about Medical Home through their experiences.
