In an attempt to rewrite American history incorporating "long hidden facts" pertinent to the American Indian, this book endeavors to relate the "truth in history" and make "humanity see itself face to face without fear and in spite of the pangs of conscience". Each of 7 chapters addresses a specific aspect of American history relevant to the American Indian; they are titled as follows: (1) "Before the Invasion" (history of the Native American prior to European "invasion"); (2) "The Barbarians" (Native sophistication as opposed to European barbarism); (3)"Cultures and Conflict" (difference between Native American and European philosophy, with particular reference to land); (4) "The Treaty Era" (with U. S. land acquisition constituting the impetus behind the making and breaking of treaties, reference is made to treaties with the Iroquois, Delawares, Nez Perces, and Sioux); (5) "Extermination Through Legislation" (the "dispossessing, expropriating, and extinguishing" of Indian title to their lands, with emphasis on Indian Allotments prior to the Dawes Act); (6) "Presidents of the U. S. in American History" (the presidential role); "A Chronology of American Indian History" (annotated dates from 1494 to the end of the 19th century). (JC)
