Veterinary Technician Program Director Leadership Style and Program Success
Renda-Francis, Lori A.
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Program directors of American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary technician programs may have little or no training in leadership. The need for program directors of AVMA-accredited veterinary technician programs to understand how leadership traits may have an impact on student success is often overlooked. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study examined the leadership styles of program directors of AVMA accredited veterinary technology programs and the relationship of leadership styles to student outcomes including, graduation rate, licensure examination pass rates, and employment outcomes. Data from the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire were used to determine that there is a significant relationship between the leadership styles of program directors and the student outcome measures of graduation rate, licensing exam pass rates and employment rates after graduation. Program directors will benefit from this study, gaining a better understanding of the leadership practices they possess in their respective colleges. Identifying the appropriate leadership style in relation to student outcome success is helpful. Training for program director positions should focus on helping them develop leadership styles and further gain the necessary skills that are vital in today's education system.
