The Relationship between Teachers' Performance on the Ventures for Excellence and Their Teaching Effectiveness
Winters, Michael Joseph
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
This quantitative correlational study examined the relationship between teacher pre-hiring effectiveness evaluation and their performance evaluation scores at the end of the first year of teaching. Prior to this study, it was not known if and to what degree teachers' scores on the Ventures for Excellence B-22 screening interview correlated to their first-year effectiveness evaluation scores in an urban Arizona school district. The theoretical foundation for this study was Person-Organization Fit Theory, which posits that employers hire individuals whose values and beliefs are in alignment with the organizational philosophy. The six research questions stated for this study focused on the relationships between teachers' scores on the Ventures for Excellence B-22 screening interview and teachers' effectiveness as measured by their first-year evaluation summative score and subscale scores for planning and preparation, implementation of instruction, learning environment, teacher responsibilities, and student growth. The bivariate correlation analysis was performed on archival data for 69 first-year teachers from one school district. The results of Pearson's correlation calculations were analyzed to find answers to the six research questions. The correlation between teachers' B-22 scores and teacher responsibilities, r = 0.295, p < 0.05, was the one statistically significant finding. The results of this study indicated that the B-22 is not strongly related to post-employment teacher effectiveness as measured by teacher evaluation scores.
