This article discusses the No Passing Plan, a no-passing policy implemented at White Bear Lake (MN) High School-North Campus in order to prevent chronic tardiness and misbehavior in the halls. The plan is an alternative consequence for administrators to use with students who are disruptive in the halls or consistently tardy to class. Suspending hallway privileges is a logical consequence for students who are inappropriate in that setting. When students create a disturbance, administrators can immediately prevent further commotion by putting offenders on the No Passing Plan. In response to teachers' concerns, an action research project was designed and carried out at White Bear Lake High School to find out which discipline plan was most effective in reducing student tardiness. The action research confirms that administrators can most effectively discipline students when they get to know them and tailor discipline to their individual needs and motivations. When used appropriately, the No Passing Plan enables principals to hold students accountable for negative behaviors while keeping them in class and maintaining a positive climate for learning.
