The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effect of counselor active rehabilitation service compared with the effect of standard rehabilitation counseling in assisting individuals with coexisting psychiatric and substance abuse disorders in attaining desired life roles. This study was conducted during a 6-month period in a community-based substance abuse treatment center that was located in a culturally diverse, socioeconomically challenged, urban environment in a major northeastern city. Results indicate a significant positive effect for the treatment intervention. The participants for the current study were individuals who have dual diagnosis disorders. Results indicate a significant positive effect for the treatment intervention. (Contains 2 tables.)
