COMETS Science. Career Oriented Modules to Explore Topics in Science.
Smith, Walter S.; And Others
COMETS Science (Career Oriented Modules to Explore Topics in Science) was developed to demonstrate to early adolescents that learning mathematics and science concepts can have payoff in a wide variety of careers and to encourage early adolescent students (grades 5-9), especially girls, to consider science-related careers. The program provides 24 modules (sets of supplemental lesson plans) to enable teachers to bring into their science or mathematics classes community resource people to (1) teach a captivating science lesson; (2) tell students how the science concept being demonstrated is used in their career; and (3) talk with students and answer questions about their career. In general, each module describes three activities plus extension activities which can be used to follow up a resource person's visit. Modules are presented in three sections, focusing on: physical science/engineering; life science/health; and mathematics, calculating, and computers. A separate set of 24 biographical sketches (COMETS Profiles) is also available for use with the program. (Author/JN)
