The Uniform Slavic Transliteration Alphabet (USTA) was designed primarily with the following objectives: to aid librarians (catalogers and bibliographers), information scientists, transliterators, and editors of bibliographic works of the many Slavic tongues; and to serve as original research for the further development of a machine-readable system of Slavic alphabets in data processing for libraries and documentation centers. USTA consists of 97 graphemes based on the 26 letters of English alphabet which are used alone, paired, and in combination with 13 diacritic marks. USTA can be utilized for the transliteration of the following languages: Bulgarian, Croatian, Chech, Kashubian, Lower Lusatian, Macedonian, Old Slavonic-Cyrillic, Old Slavonic-Glagolitic, Polabian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian, Upper Lustian, and White Russian.
