Emerging Information Literacy and Research-Method Competencies in Urban Community College Psychology Students
Wolfe, Kate S.
Community College Enterprise, v21 n2 p93-99 Fall 2015
This article details an assignment developed to teach students at urban community colleges information-literacy skills. This annotated bibliography assignment introduces students to library research skills, helps increase information literacy in beginning college students, and helps psychology students learn research methodology crucial in psychology. This assignment was developed for a general psychology course that typically has no prerequisites so anyone can enroll. Therefore, the students who take this course vary in levels of English proficiency, vary in whether they have taken a college-level English course, vary in whether or not they are prepared to take college courses, and most are first-semester freshman students. This annotated bibliography requires students to do library research, and locate and read empirical articles in psychology. The author requires attendance at library workshops teaching how to find empirical sources and how to write a correct APA-style citation. Most students who attended both workshops completed the assignments successfully with a grade of C or better. The author believes this assignment may be beneficial to other faculty, who will see this as helpful when choosing a formal writing assignment for their general psychology or introductory social science course.
