University Science and Engineering Libraries. Second Edition. Contributions in Librarianship and Information Science, Number 49.
Mount, Ellis
This six-part book provides a current account of the nature of science and engineering (SE) libraries at colleges and universities. Part I provides an overview of academic SE libraries and compares and contrasts science/technology libraries in the public and special library categories with their academic counterparts. Part II deals with various aspects of library management, including planning, budgeting, organizational patterns, supervision and staffing, use of computers, library networks, and the technique of evaluating libraries. Part III discusses cataloging and acquisitions activities, types of catalogs, role of online catalogs, care of collections (including environmental aspects, physical treatment of materials, and security factors affecting library collections). Part IV addresses topics related to user services, including reference services (manual versus online handling of reference questions), circulation and availability of collections, and services for which fees are commonly charged. Part V deals with various aspects of collections and collection development. Part VI considers, respectively, the planning of library facilities and library furnishings and equipment. A survey of selected science/technology libraries is provided in an appendix. (JN)
