In Perfect (Imperfect) Harmony: Keene State College and Keene, New Hampshire Rebalance Community Relations through Historic Preservation

At the conclusion of the 2007-08 academic year, the City of Keene and Keene State College (KSC) began to celebrate the college's 100th anniversary. Keene is the 23,000-person hub of a 70,000-person county in southwestern New Hampshire. The history of a supportive town-gown relationship began prior to the college's founding in 1909. The city had worked for two years to secure the location of a new normal school in Keene (over three other locations), in part by granting the state funds sufficient to acquire two of the most precious and prestigious properties on the west side of the city's Main Street. The conclusion of the 2007-08 academic year also saw the conclusion of a yearlong discussion between the KSC president and a working committee established by the mayor regarding the drafting of a new municipal services agreement for each party's governing body. Any acrimony that had arisen about KSC's contribution to the city for municipal services was now set aside. The traditional mutual support provided by one party to the other was captured in the college's centennial celebration kick-off performance titled "In Perfect Harmony," a reenactment of the city's 1907 debate over allocating funds for the state's acquisition of land starring campus and community leaders. In this article, the author discusses how Keene State College and Keene, New Hampshire rebalance community relations through historic preservation. (Contains 5 figures.)
