Relearning To Teach Arithmetic Addition and Subtraction: A Teacher's Study Guide.
Russell, Susan Jo
This package features videotapes and a study guide that are designed to help teachers revisit the operations of addition and subtraction and consider how students can develop meaningful approaches to these operations. The study guides' sessions are on addition, subtraction, the teacher's role, and goals for students and teachers. The readings in the guide feature: (1) Relearning about Arithmetic; (2) Approaches to Addition and Subtraction; and (3) carrying and borrowing. The two videotapes entitled "Students' Approaches to Addition and Subtraction" and "Teaching and Learning about Addition and Subtraction", are included and designed for viewing in a professional development setting. The first tape focuses on students as they demonstrate and explain to the teacher and their classmates how they solved problems involving whole-number computation. The second tape, which features narration and a number of interviews with teachers, offers a perspective on the kinds of learning environments that support students as they build their understanding of the operations.
