Organizing Self-Employment Programs: A Guide for Development Organizations.
Rinehart, Eric L., Ed.; Lamb, Melissa, Ed.
This resource guide is intended to help communities that want to implement an entrepreneurship training program. Chapters I and II contain general advice for the planning process, such as how to assess need and community support, assess current services for entrepreneurs, select target clientele, develop a community support network, and identify funding sources. Chapters III and IV provide guidelines for recruiting and selecting participants. Topics include how to promote the program within the community, what criteria may be used to evaluate potential participants, and examples of screening tools. Chapters V, VI, and VII offer assistance in planning and implementing the training phase of the program, such as scheduling, possible training topics, suggested instructional techniques, and how to focus the training components on the development of a business plan by each participant. Chapters VIII and IX provide suggestions on how to move the participants from the business plan to the start-up phase, including reinforcement of the coursework, critique of the business plan, identification of sources of information and ongoing support, and location of sources of financing for business start-ups. Chapter X includes tips for program evaluation. Exhibits include annotated bibliographies of planning and curriculum materials and sample program forms and materials. (YLB)
