In this article Susan Jacobson offers advice on connecting and leading as a college or university president, whether new to the job or with years of experience. The key, Jacobson says, is communicating. She explains that while it might sound obvious, the importance of reaching out, connecting, and building and maintaining relationships cannot be stressed enough. Done well, it can lead toward great success, and done poorly, it can have a negative impact on one's priorities and initiatives. University and college presidents serve an average of nine years in the position which presents a huge opportunity to build a profile internally and in the wider community. In her work with new presidents of higher education institutions, ranging from large research universities to smaller liberal arts colleges, Jacobson starts with an initial framework to build a personalized and fully inclusive communications approach.
